Purpose. This register records the registration, insurance, immunisation, mandatory training and competency status of every clinical and clinical support worker so that no one practises outside their scope or with an expired credential.

1.What the register records

The register holds one line per worker with their national registration or qualification, registration expiry, professional indemnity insurance expiry, working with children check, immunisation status, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid currency, hand hygiene training, reprocessing competency, radiation licence where relevant and any conditions on their practice.

2.Checking registration

Reception must verify every registered practitioner's registration on the national register before they start and the Practice Manager must re-check every practitioner on the first working day of each month and record the date of the check. A practitioner whose registration has lapsed or carries new conditions must not see patients until the Medical Director has reviewed the situation.

3.Mandatory training

All clinical staff must hold current cardiopulmonary resuscitation training renewed annually, hand hygiene training renewed annually, and the training listed for their role. Reprocessing room operators must hold the reprocessing competency and be reassessed every two years. Dental staff who take radiographs must hold the required licence.

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: every 12 months
  • Hand hygiene: every 12 months
  • Reprocessing competency: every 24 months
  • Emergency drill participation: every 12 months

4.Immunisation

Evidence of immunity or vaccination for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, pertussis and seasonal influenza must be recorded before clinical work starts. Staff who decline a vaccination must sign a declaration and the Clinical Nurse Manager must assess whether their duties need to change.

5.Expiry alerts

The register flags every credential 60 days before expiry. The Practice Manager will notify the worker and their department lead and record the outcome. Any worker with an expired mandatory credential must be rostered off clinical duties until it is renewed.

6.Access

The register contains personal information and must be accessed only by the Practice Manager, the Medical Director, department leads for their own staff and the accreditation surveyor on request. Workers can see their own line on request.
